Simple Layout Tutorial

Introduction
In this tutorial, I will show you how to make a simple layout using my brushes and default fonts. Obviously, using images, brushes and fonts from other resources sites, and so on, are quite all right, and highly encouraged. I don't want to see this exact layout on someone's site, or anything extremely similar. This is just to help you intigrate foreign techniques with your own.

Onto the tutorial!

Step 1 Open your canvas. I usually start with a standard size of 700 X 500 for my premades, and 900 X 600 for my size layouts. Depending on where my inspiration takes me, it is adjusted via cropping or the "canvas size" (Image > Adjustment > Canvas Size...) function. The canvas size for my image in this particular tutorial is 570X350. I made the background of mine slightly off-white, as not to burn the eyes of visitors.

Step 2 Make a new layer; mine is named "halftone." Now we begin applying brushes! If you are using an image, which I am not, I would suggest cutting it, editing it, and sizing it before applying brushes. I am starting off with my Halftone Splat brushes. I place a random one, in the color of #BAD90E, around the upper left hand corner. I place another random brush (different from the first), in the color #4DB5E1 on top of it. This is what I have so far.

Step 3 Make a new layer; mine is named "splats." I then pick a random brush from my Grungy Mess set, in black, and put it in the middle of the of the other brushes. I then take another brush from this set, and make the color a midgrey. I place this ontop of the black brush, slightly to the right. This is what I have so far.

Step 4 Make a new layer; I named this layer "old doc." I use a brush from my Old Documents set, in the color #D4870F and placed it, off to the left, on top of the black/grey splatter brushes. This is my result thus far.

Step 5 Now it's time for some font accents. I write each line in its own layer. You should probably use song lyrics, or perhaps the title of your layout, for this step. I just wrote example text in black Times New Roman, and the last line in white. After I am done typing them, I rastersize the layers and behind them use the rectangle shape tool to "highlight" the text. I then move it up to the cluster of brushes and rotate them to my liking. After that, I merge them all into one layer and name it "text". This is what I was talking about.

Step 6 Back to brushes. Create a new layer; mine is named "dots." I use brushes from my Cut Along set, and stamped around the cluster to make a longer image. This required some rotating on my part. This is what my image has become so far.

Step 7 Title time! This is the step where I add the name of my site and its "subtitle." I used Bookman Old style, size 48(?) and blah. Obviously, fancy fonts are fine, I just felt like using default fonts. Now, you can put the title anywhere you'd like. I put mine on the right, "on top" of the dotted line that is jutting out. This is my result.

Step 8 - Optional This stelp should probably come at the end, should you choose to do it, but during screencapping I did it after the titling. Basically, this is where I chose where I wanted my rollovers to be (see this tutorial on rollover making). If you don't do them, then don't worry! This is where I chose where mine would go.

Step 9 I call this step "Final Touches." I look over the image to see if I want anything changed/altered/added etc. I thought the title looked to plain, so I added a brush behind it and highlighted the subtitle. I also poorly decorated my rollover links. This is my final image.
