An Introduction
I am what one would call a "grammar nazi." I judge you (negatively) when you use poor grammar. I cringe when I see sumthin typd lyk dis 2 me n me
email or cbox wen ur talkn 2 me. My soul cries when I don't see use of punctuation or capitalization. I have taken it upon myself to explain
why grammar is important, even on "teh internets."
When you are illiterate, you come off as stupid.
I've already stated that I judge you when you use poor grammar. I am not alone. You could be a Nobel Prize in Physics winner with four PhD's
by the time you were 25 and still present yourself online as an idiot by using chatspeak. Which looks more intelligent to you/wat looks mor inteligent 2 u?
Illiteracy also lessens your credibility to the internet community.
Which would you be more likely to believe, "I'll love you forever" or "ill luv u 4evar"?
When you are illiterate, you are confusing.
Frankly, I find chatspeak very hard to read. Again, I'm not alone. While many are fluent in the aforementioned butchering of the English (or another) Language,
it's not a good idea to confound those you are communicating with, even with simple phrases. For example, notice the difference between "lets eat mom" and "Let's eat, mom."
Or in the case of capitalization, the difference between "polish" and "Polish." Sure, these can usually be figured out in context (if you can
comprehend it!), but the point is is that grammar = clarity. Beautiful, crystal clarity.
When you are illiterate, you appear lazy.
It's true. When you don't capitalize or punctuate, it's as though you're too lazy to hit the shift key or hit those extra puntuation keys.
God forbid you waste a nanosecond or two separating independent clauses!
When you are illiterate, you appear juvenile.
Maybe it's just me, but when I see an illiterate message/post, I assume the writer is 10-14 years old, depending on how illiterately it is written.
Something about, "uhhhhhhhh idk lots tanks for da cookie^^ lol" doesn't say, "I'm 25." (However, I personally don't assume someone literate is older,
I just like to think adults are literate. Well, I hope. =/)
To be continued...
When I think of more reasons for hating your illiteracy.
